The Brazier of Silver Fire
During a rest after fighting the The Dragon in Bahamut’s Vault , Sir Oakley, has a vision:
“Dorn, Silas, Endgram – Where is Hromwere? You are all required to activate the Brazier of Silver Fire!” booms a blue wizard, approaching three paladins of Bahamut struggling to move a large chest on poles designed for four men.
Still panting the youngest replies, “Vandomar, Hrom is with Elaida providing cover against the orcs breaching the next guard tower. We were being overtaken.”
“Curses and Damnation! Get into the Garrison! I’ll seal it against all but Hrom.” – the mage is searching for a scroll as he urges them through the garrison door.
As the door closes, Vandomar shouts: “Once Hrom arrives, wait until the greatest number of foes surrounds the garrison, then activate the Brazier! Bahumut’s strengthen you, boys!”
Oakley awakens – “I know where to find the Brazier of Silver Fire. This sword we retrieved from the Dragon’s horde wants me to finish something…”
He points out a large ruined building about two hundred yards away on the wall of the abbey “That is the garrison. It is at the edge of the Orc encampment, so we will either have to fight all the orcs along the way, or find a means to sneak to the garrison without detection.”
Sneaking on the Walls at Dusk
They quickly form a plan: Wait until dusk and sneak along the top of the wall from parapet to parapet…
The fighters’ armor are too noisy, so they stow them and travel unprotected.
The guard towers on this side of the abbey are deserted…
… and heavily damaged.
A bit tricky to move around. Fortunately, the Bard’s companion Skraw makes a great distraction for an orc that happens along the wall.
Encounter 4: The Ruined Garrison
When darkness sets fully in, they drop down next to the garrison…
To discover that it is guarded by a wraith, who hisses: “Only the bearer of the lonely sword passes this way unharmed. Vandomar must open the seal.”
You guessed it, Oakley is carrying Hrom’s sword, and can pass through the doors unharmed. Inside are four paladin statues (three with swords, one missing) and two more wraiths.
The wraiths are what’s left of Dorn, Silas, and Endgram, “Protect the brazier” “Save the Abbey” they hiss, attacking our heroes out of a twisted understanding of duty.
They are no match for the heroes…
…but around the corner comes a demon – left over from the events 100 years ago, no doubt…
Focused fire is a powerful thing and the abomination falls quickly.
The chest containing the brazier has four slots several inches wide around it. As they unlock it, a huge blinding flash of light bursts out – clearly meant to dispatch the undead.
Unfortunately, the flash was so bright it beamed out of the arrow-slits and the ruined upper floors, so the party grabbed the brazier, braced the doors and high-tailed it out of the ruined upper floor of the garrison, following the outside of the wall back and around to the secret staircase to Dragon’s Roost.
Encounter 22: Bringing Light to the Darkness
At nearly midnight, Oakley begins the ritual to clear the Dragon’s Roost. A flaming angel of Bahamut leads them from structure to structure while Oakley chants the holy words.
The Forsite Irregulars provide cover and protection from many threats [spoilers removed.]
The evil influence here is not giving up without a fight! The angel leads them back to the Temple of Bahamut, all will be decided here.
Unexpectedly, Oakley stumbles! A demon possesses Oakley! Shute tries to protect him (and risks losing control of her very soul) by placing Jacinth around his neck.
This buys time for a desperate gambit: Florynsael draws and activates a card from the Deck of Many things: The Rogue and uses it’s chaotic power to order the demon out of Oakley!
Success!
Oakley fears that using the forces of Chaos against themselves may have weakened the temple, and he decides to stay behind in an attempt to restore the temple grounds, and perhaps recruit more paladins. “I can see the error of our ways. We can rebuild.”
Reluctantly the Irregulars leave Oakley behind to begin the restoration effort, and return to Winterhaven to check in with Lord Padraig in “Auld Acquaintance in the Feygrove”
